HISTORY - Horologically speaking, watchmaking
originated in small workshops in the Swiss mountain region of the Vallee
de Joux. J.H. Allison was the first member of the Allison family to produce
watches. Mr. Allison started producing watches in 1853 in Detroit,
Michigan, USA with the release of his chronometer with full plate and a fusee
with chain drive. The balance had time screws and sliding weights.
In 1864, he made a 3/4 plate chronometer with gold wheels. He also
damaskeened the nickel movement. By 1883, he was making 3/4 plate
movements with a stem wind of his own design. Mr. Allison made most of his
own parts and designed his own tools. He also altered some key wind
watches to stem wind. Some of these early Allison watches command nearly $20,000
in the collector market, today. Mr. Allison died in 1890, and it wasn't until the
late 20th century that the Allison family name would again appear on timepieces.
